This is a different take on a cinemagraph. A painting comes alive when the subjects interact with the canvas! The photo /video was taken in the Latin Quarter.....Paris. You can enlarge the image by clicking on it.
Cinemagraphs are fun to play around with. They are different from animated GIFs because only part of the image moves. I have not yet perfected this but this was one of my first attempts. They work better if there is just one almost imperceptible area of movement. That way when one look at the picture not expecting movement....you think your eyes are deceiving you!
We spent last week in the Smokies and what a week it was! We were enveloped in the contrast of nature. We went from glorious sunshine and Autumn changing leaves to a winter storm. I was able to check off a hope on my bucket list. To be in the mountains during a winter storm and be able to capture it in images. The most amazing treat to the senses was the quiet…with the blank of snow, the only sound heard was the rushing stream.
Three things I can count on...death, taxes and the Ferris wheel will always be in the same place.

The west side nut club fall festival begins today. For over 50 years I have entered the park and the Ferris wheel has greeted me. It has been the right of passage for so many young lovers who sat in the carriage on a cool crisp October night. A boy always seems bolder in the the Ferris wheel. It gives him the right to put his arm around her and draw her in close. Both sit there in a tense silence as the wheel ratchets itself around until both step off the platform and disappear into the crowd. The hand is held tighter than before.
I lost my best friend today. Al my life…literally…I have had a dog. There have been only two times when the loss of a dog has been devastating for me. A German shepherd named Geneve, a dog I had in college and today’s loss of Scooter…a Wheaton Terrier. At almost 13 she beat the odds on her normal lifespan but she still left too soon. That cold nose will no longer be poking out of the crack in the door when I get home, that smile that began with the wag of a tail and moved like earthquake shockwaves all along her body until her whole body was shaking from happiness will no longer be there. That “Wheaton Run” (you can see it on you tube) that made me want to brace for the collision when she bounced off my chest is gone. I know, I have lost before….parents, other friends and loved ones….time soothes the wound and leaves only the good memories…but that does not make this time any easier.

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day! This year is different for me. I have always looked forward to Autumn and the change of seasons that is so beautiful in the midwest. But this year is not the same for me. I think it is because we , for the most part, escaped the endless procession of summer days with drenching humidity. Yes, we had a descent Summer with dry warm days and sometimes even cool. So the yearning for a cooler change is not as strong within me as it normally is. Even though Labor Day reminds us that we are on the brink of a change before too long….at least in the Midwest we still have some Summer days to build memories before the winds and grays of late fall settles in.
Many of you guys have been following my blog since 2008 and some have come on board recently. I have asked before when I needed you input and I have always valued your opinion.

I am thinking about selling my photographs at an upcoming art show in Southern Indiana. Along with my other images....many of which you all have seen on the blog, I am also thinking about marketing my most recent addictions....my small planets. I am creating small planets of iconic buildings, monuments, houses and neighborhoods around southern Indiana. I know that most of you following the blog live far from southern Indiana so the settings will mean nothing to you but I am asking for comments on the idea as much as the content.

If you have the time could you post a quick comment of your first impressions....it would be very helpful and I would be forever in your debt!

Thanks,
I think we often get lost in our own little world...sometimes oblivious to what is going on around us. I know I am guilty of that. As long as everything is bright and sunny in my little world....I tend to forget that others may not be experiencing the same forecast in their world. Sometimes it is stormy all around us and we don't know it. Let's be thankful when we have those sunny days!
Wow! It is July 15th today. Normally in the midwest on any given July 15th the temperature hovers between 95 and 100 F. Today however for the first time in a long time.....we had Spring! Low 70's...so nice I went outside and took a picture of our home planet!
In the Latin Quarter of Paris, there is aways someone to talk to if you get up the nerve to try our your French. The French are very proud of their language and and rightly so... a beautiful language it is. If you make it to the Latin Quarter, stroll down the narrow streets in the early morning when the restaurants are just beginning to set up for the busy day ahead. You will find someone who wants to talk!
I am burnt out on winter. Or at least I was until tonight. On the way home, I took a detour down Denzer road. We have some land for sale on this 2 mile long stretch of road in the county. As I passed by one of my favorite views, I paused for a look.

I grabbed the camera and walked across the open field to where I could get an unobstructed view and the peacefulness of it all with the quiet winter night closing fast helped make this unending polar vortex of a season seem a bit better. With a view like this, old man winter can stick around a while yet.
Ok....I know it is only January, I know in Australia it is summer right now, I know in Florida it may be in the 60's, But how about the Midwest? I woke up, looked outside and went back to sleep to dream of the late afternoon last summer when I watched the free spirits of youth swinging on the perfect tree, with the musty smell of cut grass at the end of an 85 degree day.

I have never wanted to travel into the future to see what is in store but I long to travel to the past....reliving the best moments of my life. I guess I just have a hard time dealing with reality. High of 16, not a color out my window other than brown.

(if you look real close as Santa....you might see someone you recognize!)
It is a play of light. Painting or photography....light and shadows for the image .....without light and shadow, there is nothing to frame our point of reference. Snow is one of the best performers when it comes to the dance of light and shadow.

Today was our first major snow of the season and it was one of those postcard snows. Cold crisp air cleans out the cobwebs and compliments the Christmas season like a warm fire and your favorite glass of spiced wine.
A departure from Paris for a posting today. This time of year always bring me back to my roots. I was born and raised here in southern Indiana and although I love the exotic places I have been fortunate enough to visit....home always provides that anchor to return to...that place where you know what is around the corner. Whether you are in small town America or living in a loft looking out over Central Park in New York City....I hope you get the chance to enjoy home, wherever that may be....during the Thanksgiving Season.
Thanks to a follower of the blog....Adrian.....he mentioned that I read "Pillars of the Earth", knowing that I liked the history behind the great cathedrals of Europe. Wow, what a book as well as it's sequel...World without End. I will pass along Adrian's suggestion....if these massive works of art built in the middle ages amaze you as they do me....please do yourself a favor and tackle the mammoth 800 page Pillars of the Earth. You won't be able to put it down.

Notre Dame on the Seine in Paris is probably the best known Gothic Cathedral. I can't hardly get my head around the fact that it took over 800 years to build this magnificent edifice. 8 or 9 generations of masons, carpenters and architects worked on this cathedral. Meaning that many of the builders did not get to see the finished product.

As with so many of the great cathedrals, gargoyles protect the church from the invasion of evil spirits. These sentinels have stood watch for over 900 years from their lofty perches. Being able to visit Notre Dame and stand within it's walls was one of the most memorable highlights of our European trek that summer.
One of our lasting impressions of Paris, the city of love were the locks. Locks of every kind and every size....locks from a grocery store.....expensive locks from locksmiths.....padlocks......combination locks and the stories they told.

Once when having lunch at a nearby cafe, our water asked us if we had we had been to Le Pont des Arts yet??? No we hadn't. "Be sure to visit before you leave Paris", he said. Merci Monsieur.....and we were on our way.

There are several bridges crossing the Seine river that cuts directly through Paris...separating the left bank from the right bank. Each bridge has a special story behind it. Napoleon's bridge, Henri the 4th's bridge, and the Place de la Concorde bridge across from the Orsay Museum. I had heard about the Pont des Arts (Bridge of the Arts) before. Often there are outdoor art exhibits on the walking bridge allowing visitors to stop and admire the artist's selections. But this was not about an art exhibit....it was about statements of love.

As we approached the bridge it was late afternoon and sun reflected off of something along the siderails of the bridge. From a distance it looked like jewels sparkling in the sunlight.

Along several of the bridges crossing the Seine, Parisians began a custom a few years ago that continues to this day...unique among the cities I have been to.

Here is the story: If you are in a relationship, the bridge gives you a chance to make a lasting statement about your lover. Buy a padlock, make your statement in permanent ink with a sharpie on the padlock, take it to one of the bridges crossing the Seine and permanently attach it to the side rail of the bridge. Then toss the key into the water below signaling a lasting commitment. However, if the relationship has not yet flowered or has become a bit "iffy"....buy instead a combination lock and attach it. That way if in fact the relationship heads south....one can always return and with the right combination remove the lock and none will be the wiser. Leave it to the Parisians to even bring love to the siderail of a bridge....maybe that is where the phrase "Love is in the air" came from?

Anyway, I know there will always be a piece of me in Paris on Le Pont des Arts.
A couple of years ago I went to see the movie "HUGO" about the boy who lived in the clock tower high above the streets of 1920 Paris. The clock tower was in one of the grand train stations of Paris. I was mesmerized by the idea of living among the clicking sounds and gears of these huge clocks. I knew that if I ever went back to Paris....I would have to visit the clock tower.

Our time in Paris afforded the opportunity to stand in the footsteps of Hugo and see the streets of Paris spread out like a wheel. This particular clock tower is also in one of the grand train stations of Paris...at least a former grand train station - The Orsay. Today it is the home of Van Gogh and many other famous artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Orsay is one of the premiere Art Galleries of Paris along with the Louvre.

The second picture above is the train station with the clock towers. the tower on the left is now a restaurant with panoramic views and the tower on the right is where I took the two pictures looking out through the face of the clock. The view on the bottom picture is of Montmartre and Sacre Couer.
After a tearful goodbye to Rene and Elizabeth in Provence, we left our oasis among the vineyards and hilltop villages of the Luberon Mountains bound for Aix en Provence to catch the Bullet train direct into the heart of Paris.

We were embarking on the final 10 days of our journey so this part of the trip was bittersweet to be sure but the anticipation of 10 days in Paris overwhelmed our melancholy and filled us with a renewed energy. The past 6 weeks had found us among the countryside and small villages of rural France melting into the culture and meeting the wonderful citizens who made us feel so at home. But now we were ready to make the switch from serenity to the buzz and electricity of one of if not the most beautiful cities in the world - Paris. 4 hours via the 285 mile an hour bullet train and we would be there.

Upon arrival, we could feel the buzz of the city swirling around us. The sounds of the city were a welcome change for us. Our hotel pictured above was located in the heart of the latin quarter. The first two pictures above were taken from our hotel room. We were in the midst of typical Parisian architecture, so iconic....when you walk the streets of the Latin Quarter....you know you are in Paris.
Two unique hilltop villages in Provence are Gordes (1st three images) and Roussillon (last 3 images). One of my favorite movies is "A Good Year" with Russell Crow. About an English Stockbroker in London that moves to Provence and finds his two loves....beautiful Provence and his beautiful future French wife. In the movie, much of it is filmed in the small hilltop village of Gordes. Believe me, it is one of those villages that is a photographer's dream. Every where you turn is another opportunity for a once in a lifetime photo.

The other village to die for is Roussillon. I think of it as the Sedona of France. It is perched high atop a hilltop of red clay and for centuries, it's pottery of red clay has been sought after worldwide. The buildings are all painted with the colors of the countryside. As you see it from a distance, you are standing in the midst of a sea of purple Lavender fields that surround the hilltop at it's base. This beautiful lavendar is set against a see of reds, and ochres of the village of Roussillon.

One of the best meals I had in France was at a small bistro in Roussillon. It was a very hot July day in Provence and what a treat it was to settle in for an ice cold serving of Gazpacho made from fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and croutons. Without a doubt the best Gazpacho I have ever had.

Now with the fresh season here in Indiana, I will be making some Gazpacho this weekend. Pair it with a chilled Pinot Grigio and I am in heaven.

Sante!
Our time at "The Refuge" was finished. Marie, the owner of the Refuge, knew of a couple nearby down in the valley that had just remodeled a cottage on their homestead for their daughter. However their daughter had left to visit Corsica and decided to stay on the Island. So now they had a wonderful cottage but it was empty. Marie put us in contact with Rene and Elisabeth Pantalucci.....the owners of the cottage. They had decided to rent it out as a Gite and we were the first to stay there.

What a couple Rene and Elisabeth were! They were Provencal....born and raised in Provence and spoke Provencal....a dialect of French spoken in the southeast part of France. By this time I had become quite at ease with speaking French and could make a pretty good conversation but this was a totally new experience for me. To me when Rene spoke....it seemed as though it was a different language. It would be like a student who studied prim and proper Oxford English and attempted to speak to Louisiana Cajuns. More about Rene and Elisabeth later. The unique part about this cottage was the olive grove in the last image. It was our own private grove! Rene had planted the grove next to the cottage. The trees were full of Provençal Olives...a treat each night at our meals. Such a fundamental part of the Provencal Mediterranean diet. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would ever have our own Olive Grove....even if it were only for a week!
It was the last throws of twilight on a summer evening during the 1st week in July. That time of evening when the sunset golds and long shadows have faded and replaced by shades of blue. Quiet had settled on the village after a busy day of tourists and it was time for a long dinner of conversation, local seafood and wine...three things that just seem to be made for each other.

Hope you have a restful Sunday!
The sun-drenched fields of Provence became the training ground for Vincent Van Gogh. Everywhere he turned there were subjects to paint....the lavender fields, fields of sunflowers and red poppies. Farmers planting their crops and the meandering Luberon Mountains are forever chronicled in Van Gogh's paintings of this period.

Also in the village of Menerbes....the last photo above...at the end of the street near the top of the village there remains today a house that Picasso and his mistress Dora Maar lived in for several years. I can understand how the view from his home in Menerbes inspired many of his paintings as well.
The village of Menerbes is not one of the hilltop villages of the Luberon Mountains that is often visited by tourists. You can still drive up to Menerbes and talk to the residents, the shop owners or the local grocer and find out all the local "goings on" with the locals. We would often head to Menerbes in the evening just before sunset at the dinner hour (8 to 10 pm local time) for a garden fresh salad and fresh seafood from the Mediterranean just an hour away.

At that time of the evening from the old walls of the village you can lookout over the the vineyards of Provence as they wind through the valleys of the Luberon bathed by the golden sunlight of Provence's perfect sunsets.
One of my favorite Elton John songs has always been "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters". One of the lines in the song relates....."I never knew but now I know....Rose trees never grow in New York City".......That was one of those lines in a song that I never really understood. I had no idea that there were actually Rose Trees until I saw them in France. They were often planted in very symmetrical patterns in the gardens next to Chateaux or Castles. This particular garden provided quiet walks among fresh blooming lavender (so prominent in Provence) and Rose Trees.
When I think of twilight walks...I often think of the solitude and fragrances of Rose Trees and Lavender
