Like many of you, this time of year we always feed birds and we attract all kinds to our yard. This is the first year we have seen this one. I have talked to others who say it is not uncommon to see this bird but for us it is a first. We have always seen the male woodpecker with it's bright read head but never his wife!

She is a very beautiful bird smaller than the male but none the less beautiful.

Congratulations, Dan, for catching this shot of her. As I recall, I know I've seen the female but only at a distance. We've had two (LARGE-piliated) woodpeckers living in our wooded area for years. I caught it on video once and shared it...I'll post it here. I think I originally had it on myspace.

I'm pretty sure though, in all of our closest encounters with the woodpecker...they've all had the read head.

Exciting!!

Oh, and with the award, if you want it you can post the friendship button in your blog somewhere. You can do it by saving it t your computer first then adding it as a picture. And you can also post about it to pass it on if you want to- but nothing is mandatory really. :)

Dan, I love this shot! I've never seen a female woodpecker before. So cool! She has beautiful coloring. Birds always to convey a bit of "character" in photos. At least to me:)

Heather...I remember your post. You had a picture of the female and I commented at the time that I had seen the males but never the female before. It look just like the one in my picture.

I like your new avatar!
