Another example of HDR...instead of taking three photos with different exposures...you can also use one photo and save three different versions of it with different exposures. This will only work if the original photo has a wide range of exposure levels in it already.

Bobbi had suggested that I post an image of an old Barn. I had earlier posted a photo of an old house that was in the movie "League of Their Own" that was filmed on this property. This is the barn that goes with the house. There is a scene in the movie where the two sisters are milking a cow...this is the barn that it was filmed in. It is a mile or so from my house.

The photo was taken in the late afternoon with the sun low on the horizon. This time of day casts long shadows and I thought it was appropirate to take a shot of the barn at this time. The sun was figuratelively setting on this old barn. Having seen it's better days, it still stands as a reminder of of the days when the family farm was passed from generation to generation. Never a questions as to what you were going to do with your life...you were going to carry on the tradition with pride.

The old barn housed the harness for mules and in later years probably the first gasoline tractor in the family. When I stand in the precense of an old farm, I like to listen closely for the children who used to run through the fields on hot summer evenings chasing after ligthening bugs. I swear I can sometimes hear their laughter.

With the video games and multiplex movie theater of today...keeping the kids out of the yards and fields...the lightening bugs are probably having a growth spurt in their population.

Great shot, Dan. I love old barns. They have so much character and history. You can almost hear the animals.

And that's really cool that this particular barn is 'famous'!

HA! See, Dan...the explanation you've given here...oh, yes...that is exactly what I'd be doing. See, I know this about myself; always trying to get close to the same results but finding an easier way to do it (simply me).

GREAT BARN...and really do like this format.

:)

Neat - that was one of my favorite movies when I was younger.
Lovely old barn.
And isn't it sad that kids don't go out and play anymore? I remember summers growing up... there were days that I never went inside until time to get ready for bed.

Crazy Mo,

Next time you see the movie...I think it is still being run now and then...remember the milking scene and the barn.

Vermont Heather...
It almost gives the same results and gives you the opportunity to go back through your pics and try it out rather than having to go out and take new ones!

I LOVE this one! I love all the shadows on the barn.

I'm working on a series of shadow poems and I may have to write one about this photo.

And the barn is famous too - cool!

Alabama Heather....
You are probably one of the last generations to even remember those nights outside. For the most part those days are gone...really sad.

Yeah, the lightening bugs lives are exploding, and the kids' lives are shrinking.
Beautiful photograph!

Shabbygirl,
I haven't seen the lightening bugs this year as yet but looking forward to it.

Wow, Dan, I LOVE that movie! That's so awesome that it was filmed so near where you live! I can see the scene in my mind as I look at this photo. And I love your reference to the children. It is so sad how they are kept indoors with media play things instead of all those real adventures that used to broaden the imaginations back then. I really hope I can encourage my boys to play more out of doors and enjoy adventures on their own without some media toy guiding them through.

Dani,
Thanks for the kind words...It looks as though yo have them off to a good start...I remember the photos you posted on my blog of him climbing the hill...keep 'em outside!

This is marvelous! I too think of childhood days playing in the barn and can still smell and feel the luscious scent of hay!

Wonderful wire...I too love the smell of fresh cut clover hay...here is a link to an earlier post about clover hay you might enjoy:

Loved that movie. Great photo. It is a shame that kids are so wired into their games and missing all the wonder and miracles outside. I try to get my kids out as much as possible.

Septembermom...the electronic gadgets are a strong temptation...when Zach was younger, we had horses and even horses were not enough to compete with Nintendo!

Another rocking photo. I wish I had time to do try some of those shots.

Nothing better than an old barn for photographing.

Patty,
Thank you for the kind words. You can find a barn anywhere...but everyone can't do some of the past photojournalism assignments that you have done! I am envious.

I love photos of old barns as much as I love photos of windmills. :^)
I sat out on the patio and watched the lightning bugs (fireflies) last night. It is quite magical.
