Visitors in the Old Library

The Old Willard Library is haunted...really haunted. Be sure to visit the link, read the history and take a look at the many 24 hours "Ghost Cams" located throughout the old library. The Library was also featured on the Television Series :Ghost Hunters".

During the day, the old Willard is a fully functioning library branch and has been so since the 1800's. But at night when the last patron has left, the lights are turned down and the doors are locked...the real inhabitants begin to move about. Over the years, several night watchmen have resigned their posts after encounters with beings now untethered to this earth. The most common occurrences have been with a "Lady in Gray" that seems to roam the library stacks and old oak stairways...often the old stairways begin to creak as something begins to ascend from the basement. Her father was the original owner of the building in the 1800's and he mysteriously cut her out of his inheritance...she now makes the Library her home...a home that was stolen from her so many decades ago.

You might want to revisit the photos again looking for uninvited visitors...you may be surprised at what you find if you look closely. The black and white photo from an old window on the third floor is possibly what the Lady in Gray sees while she roams the old building that has become her prison...possibly the closest she will ever come to being outside the four walls ever again.

oh I love Willard Library. What great pictures. The times I have been in there, I have not felt any kind of presence around but I would love to. I've heard the children's section is very active, but again when I was there with my son, I didn't feel anything. But that could've been because there were excited children running around!

I saw the episode on Ghost Hunters that featured Willard, but I think their findings were inconclusive, unfortunately. It has fantastic architecture, great old floors and is just a beautiful building. Thanks for posting this :) -Jaime

Pictures approved! They ARE good.
And the library does have a ring of Hogwarts (Harry Potter) or Unseen University (Pratchett's Discworld) to it...
The picture with the moon is awesome, and so is the black-and-white one looking out of the window. And I did see a ghost or two in the others. Not that I trust you on those, mind... ;)

Jaime...thanks for the comment. Willard IS an awesome old building. There is nothing in Evansville that is more fitting to show at Halloween! The search for the Lady in Gray has become an obsession for some in Evansville.

Thanks for visiting today!

Dawn Treader...WHEW! It is 4:45 in the morning here and I am getting ready to go Substitute teach today but I had to check first to see if you have visited! I am relieved that the pictures passed inspection! I have entered 4 of my pictures in a juried exhibit and will find out today if they were accepted. You are tougher than the judge!

And you are right...don't trust me on the "visitors" in the images...I may just have taken a bit of "artistic" license on them to get across a point today!

I enjoyed your comment.

Good luck in the exhibit Dan! Not that I really think you need "luck"... I'm sure your pictures will speak for themselves.

Yes, Dan, your photos may very literally "speak" for themselves.
;^)
Great job on all of the photos and all of the spooky extra work!
;^)
I love night and the moon and mist being involved again... did you actually go down there at night with a full moon? If so...VERY brave!!!
;^)
Where I grew up in Nevada, there is a park called Bower's Mansion...halfway between Reno and Carson City. The mansion is from the 1800's silver boom. It is haunted by one of the daughters that died young. They even have the family photos from the 1800's with her ghostly figure in them...and you KNOW they did not have our photo-altering techniques then! ;^0

I saw the episode of Ghost Hunters that featured the Willard Library. How exciting to have easy access to such a great building, I'd be there all the time!
Your collection of pictures really set the mood, especially with your 'artistic' additions.
A really cool post!

Hi, Dan thanks for the kind words about Willard and of course, the chance to see your awesome photos! While the TAPS visit was "inconclusive", Grant and J. (who were really nice guys and great to work with) did see a "mist" climb the wall in our 2nd floor meeting room-- unfortunately, no cameras were rolling at the time so they couldn't use it on the show! Anyway, Happy Halloween and Happy Ghosthunting to All!

Dawn Treader...an update on the exhibit...3 of 4 photos that I submitted made it past the judge so I consider myself very lucky! I don't think I won any of the categories however...but my main goal was to get past the judge...She was professor who teaches photography and I have heard that she was very tough.

I love GhostHunters and this library really looks haunted. I love old libraries. We have one here in Philly (the main branch) that is magnificent with Roman columns, marble stairs, etc. Perfect caption for the season :)
