I can take a planed board of oak and make a piece of furniture. But to take a branch from a tree and shape it into a beautifully finished spindle for a Windsor chair and a slab of the trunk of a maple tree and form it into perfectly smooth shaped seat for the chair is an art that I can't even dream to be competent in.
These artisans were using the most primitive types of tools to create furniture as it was created centuries ago. As I watched them and saw the finished pieces I came to realize that there is no comparison to a creation crafted by the loving skilled hands of a craftsman versus a die cut assembly line piece of furniture. Humans can accomplish great things if they pursue their true passion with a vengeance. Without the drive of a passion in life...it is a life wasted.

Hi Dan. I've not commented on your blog before even though we've passed in blogland so to speak many times.
You struck a chord with your comment aboutthe ability of craftsmen. I am a reasonably competent amateur electrician, plumber and even joiner. But carpenter I am not. The other things can be done wit competence and learning. I would suggest that true craftsmanship requires a natural talent.
However you also said that "Without the drive of a passion in life...it is a life wasted." If you follow that line would not the majority of lives on this earth be wasted? I would suggest that, for many souls on this earth, having a passion is a luxury that you and I may take for granted.

I tend to agree with you about craftsmanship being a talent...almost like an artist. There is just something innate that comes out in beauty with a craftsman or artist...something that can't be taught.
Also... I am sad to say that your insight about a passion being a luxury for many people is correct...so many potentially talented people spending their effort and resources just to survive from day to day.
However, for those of us who do have the opportunity to follow a passion...it is such a waste to ignore it or keep putting it off...before we know it...we are too old to pursue it. I speak for myself here.
