A winning business model....

These photos taken so deep into the Midwest reminded me of a Summer tradition that shows up about this time of the year each Summer.

In the middle of the abundance of corn, bell peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, squash and cantelopes a familiar business model appears on the front lawns of new brick homes, old farmhouses, or vinyl sided cape cods each August in the Midwest. I am sure you have seen the same business model crop up in your neighborhoods as well. We need to bottle the strategy and success of this entrepreneurship and sell it world wide.

The familiar site of card tables brimming with fresh garden vegetables and a sign that says "Three for a dollar", "6 for three dollars", "Home Grown".....The wonderful thing about this enterprise is the trustworthiness shown on both the grower and the buyer. On the table there is always a bucket sometimes full of dollars...untouched by prying hands. Only deposits are made...no unauthorized withdraws. At any other place in town...at any other time...for any other reason...a bucket of cash sitting on a table with no one around would be ripe for disappearing.

What is is about the table of vegetables inspiring such honesty and trustworthiness? If we could understand the psychology behind this....the world would be a better place.

The tastes of summer...this post reminds me of our honeymoon week when we camped by the lake side. Up the road, there was a fresh vegetable (store-nearly) stand...with a cash box to leave your money, bags to choose your veggies and a sweet old dog to be your welcoming friend.

If only we could have such honesty and open hearted trust as this all year long.

Nice post, Dan ♥

Those tomatoes look yummy and what a bargain!
A lot of people in our area put their veggies, eggs, etc. in front of their houses and farms on the honor system. It's one of the nice things about country living.
I did a post about it a while back, if you want to take a peek. http://www.barnyardsandbarnacles.com/2010/07/

Hope your days are a little less hectic :)

Heather...I wonder why these stands are not touched by thieves yet other times if money is left out in the open...it is gone in a heartbeat?

I'm not sure why the link didn't work, I just cut and pasted it off my comment and it worked.
