Yesterday, an old friend returned.  I see him about once per year.  I don't know where he hides out during the 364 other days but it seems that one time per year he drops by to say hi.  Our normal woodpeckers in this area are the smaller types but this guy is king of the birds in our yard...about the size of a large crow.  Hope I see him next year.

I have been lucky to find 3 varieties of woodpeckers. I've been longing to find one of these. Lucky you, if even for one day.

Dan, do you recall the video that I took years ago of our pileated woodpecker? We had a pair that would visit once a year for a few weeks and then go off to who knows where, but would return. I've not seen them in the last two years :(

Hi Betty. It was an amazing site especially since he only comes around once per year!

Yes heather....I do remember the video! I read that they are monogamous for life so that was truly a "couple" that you saw.

Also be sure to check tomorrows post...there is a message to you!

She's a beauty! Looks like she's enjoying some insects.

If the Buddhists are right, I hope I don't return as a wood beetle.

Serious envy at this end! I've never seen a Pileated in the wild.
