I sat with my espresso, reviewing images from a morning of shooting. The coffee shop is one where you can spend an afternoon without feeling rushed. A place to relax and organize your thoughts.

The entire time I stayed in the coffeehouse, the abandoned sweet roll and cappuccino sat alone on the table. Did someone order, receive an urgent call and leave in frenzy? Were the cappuccino and roll the beginnings of a conversation between two lovers that went wrong? I noticed that the items were placed on the table but the chairs were neatly put back in their place or never pulled out to begin with. One thing for sure... this was the beginning of something that never came to fruition.

After a morning of beautiful weather, some great shots of the Spring flowers and the still light green leaves - yet translucent in the early spring, the one image that remains with me was not the landscape but the abandoned cup of coffee...of a respite not taken.

Wonderful picture and corresponding thoughts. The abandoned coffee does lend itself to speculation. Maybe there is a story there for an aspiring writer...

Septembermom.
Perhaps an aspiring writer will get the chance...I sent the picture to Laura Jayne at PPP so she may use it.

Dani,
Thank you...I found the fact that no one claimed the coffee intriguing. I sent the picture to the owner of the coffeehouse...perhaps she knows the story behind it...if so, I will pass it along.

This is pretty cool, Dan - I like the photo, how you've shared your thoughts and I, too, wonder...hmmm...

Thanks Heather...it left me wondering as well. It is not like the answer will solve world hunger but I just find it one of unanswered puzzles.

Strange how they were left behind, yet the chairs were pushed back into their rightful spots. Now you have me speculating the reason. Wonderful shot.
I wish we had a coffee shop that stayed open late into the evening. Ours opens at the same time I come to work and closes about the time I get off.

Alabama Heather,
This particular coffee shop has peculiar hours as well. It is not open late but the atmosphere is very inviting and no pressure to leave once your coffee is finished...nice place to just drop out of the mainstream for a while and chill.

What a perfect spot. Does it feel as good inside the shop as it looks in the picture?
Wouldn't it be interesting if the owner leaves coffee and a roll out on purpose. Kind of like a rememberance of a love, or wonderful friend? Or an offering. You know at PPP there will be an enormous response to this picture!

Shabbygirl,
I have submitted the photo to PPP. Maybe Laura Jayne will use it. If she does...you should expand on the idea of the owner leaving it out for a special reason...that is a great idea. My jaw will drop if that coffee and roll are on the table again when I visit the next time! If so, I will let you know!

well, Dan. The coffee was put there for you!
Along with a roll!
Were you so busy with your pictures you didn't see that?
(just kidding)

(then again, maybe if they knew you were a photographer, eh?)

Boneman,
Interesting scenarios! Since there were so many intriguing scenarios left by our fellow participants...I emailed the owner of the coffeehouse and asked her if she knew. She sent me the answer and if she gives me permission to post her answer to the puzzle...I will post it tomorrow.

One more comment on the coffee:

There has been so much speculation on the abandoned coffee so I emailed the owner of the shop and she was kind enough to get back to me and gave her permission to post her response:

"thanks Dan, your blog is beautiful. Thanks for making us a part of it. I've worked on this place - allowing it to simply evolve over time and I am often taken back by a photo captured such as yours...a moment frozen in time but I remember that day and even the abandoned cup of coffee left by a musician called out by a cell phone conversation....shameful isn't it? This was fun."

Laura

Thanks Laura for clearing up the puzzle for us!
