This post will run through Friday and then I will have a 4th of July post on Saturday...My hopes are that everyone will have a great 4th and an enjoyable holiday with the family...IT'S SUMMER!

What is so special about a cornfield?....Nothing really...

Last night I had the night to myself and had an epiphany! It was a beautiful night as the sun set with bloated clouds holding off their rain as they passed over. I drove out on gravel roads that I had never traveled down before and was taken back by so many beautiful scenes that I had passed by before without really taking the time to look.

I came to the realization that I am posting these images and speaking about them as if I had all the time in the world...AND YOU SHOULD TAKE THE TIME TOO! Then I realized that I am in a different place than most of the followers of my blog. I am an empty nester...following my passion while the readers of the blog still have active families and so many demands on their time and you are often torn so many directions that you have to eek out small morsels of sanity whenever and wherever you can.

I have been there. Business plans, presentations, merit reviews, son with the flu, in-law functions that I didn't want to attend, weekends at meetings away from the family, dishes, dinner, baths, homework, major school projects revealed to me the night before they were due, endless hours of sesame street and Barney...a whirlwind of responsibilities....responsibilities that heap on guilt if you dare spend time for yourself. I just want to tell you that there is light at the end of the tunnel....there will be a day when you look back at those times with envy believe it or not...just to have the kids back at that age. Even as hectic as it is now for you...it is worth it...it is just hard to remember that when you are in the middle of all the turmoil.

I will get off my soapbox now! I want this blog to be a place where you can take your 45 seconds to 2 minutes (average time spent on a blog before moving on...) on this blog as a respite from the duties and step into the image with me and relax. Hopefully for that brief slice of life...you can separate yourself from the whirlwind and take your own personal journey. I will promise to take your small amount of time seriously and will continue to try my best to make your time here worthwhile!

Cornfields special? Not really but it takes your mind off the sink full of dishes for 45 seconds!

I love this post Dan. I haven't quite gotten to the hectic part of life yet. No real commitments outside of work. I'll have to keep this in mind when I (hopefully) have a family some day. It's important to stop and smell the cornfield. :)

Heather...I love it! I will have to remember to stop and smell the cornfield!!!

Heather you haven't reached the frenzied Barney...sesame street demands as yet but I'll bet your life gets a bit hectic with the delayed flights, deadlines and petty personalities at work????

Thankfully I work with some pretty great people, but deadlines and delayed flights can definitely be a headache. But I imagine they'd be much crazier with Barney and Seasme Street thrown in the mix!

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July and bring us back some lovely patriotic shots.

Life inspired, huh? Thank you, Dan :)

So much of my days are filled with these thoughts...that my time with my boys is limited and one day they will be grown with lives of their own. It's such a struggle for me to know this, want more than anything to make these days matter and impressions lasting of goodness, love and comfort, acceptance and peace...AND then the reality sets in...these are three boys I'm living with (hahaha). I couldn't have been made to be a mother of any other, than my three boys :)

There's just those days that I DO want to run out into the cornfield for a few minutes and listen to the wind blowing through the large leaves...all by myself. Those days may or may not come but I know that they are here, in my heart and mind...

Very sweet and thoughtful post.

Oh...if only I had a laptop :) - some day I will....oh, yes, I will.

Heather....I guess it would be kind of crowed in the closet with a desktop! Sorry! You might check into netbooks...they will do everything you want to do on the net such as blogging etc. You could still do your photo downloads etc...on your desktop. Netbooks are not nearly as expensive at laptops and some have 10 inch screens or so. Just a thought.

I think that all cornfields are special, especially when the light is right but your photo makes them into a fairy tale land.

Love it. You rock!

Patty...thank you so much for your kind words...here's hoping you have a great 4th.

You are so right. What a different life once the kids are grown. Then the grandkids come to visit and it's crazy hectic for a bit (and you LOVE it) and then they go home and while you're sad there's also a bit of relief!

And I like cornfields. I like the first little leaves that pop through that you can barely see and then before you know it they are past the "knee high by 4th of July" stage and green, waving in the wind or still as statues on a windless day.

What a great description! In the Midwest as you know, we tend to take them for granted but they are beautiful this time of year...and then in Autumn, the sight of corn shucks always heralds cooler weather and the onset of fall colors.

For a city girl like me, walking through a cornfield would be a surreal and uplifting experience. I'm glad that I can do it "virtually" through your blog for a minute or two! Enjoy your weekend, Dan!

I will make yo a deal...I will take you through a cornfield if you will take me down the streets of New York! I love New York City...been there several times and as strange as it seems...I get an adrenaline rush (although somewhat differently)like I do when I observe nature. The complexity and cosmopolitan genes of New York City is a sight to behold!

Oh yes, I remember those days quite fondly. Being the single mother of one child made it a bit less hectic, except for those years I was also working full time and getting my graduate degree. ;-)

Slowing down has always been important to me. Even if it is just to smell the proverbial rose in the neighbor's garden.

Or visit your site with its lovely images and thoughtful prose.

Have a good 4th! Love the porch photo, too. How I long for the 3-sided screened-in porch of my grandmother's old house, complete with a creaky swing and deliciously cool well room.

Jennifer...
I long for one of those "creaky" swings myself!
