Wow! What a wierd bu...bir...thing.....

This takes the cake. It may be old hat to you but I had never seen anything like this before. From a distance I thought it was a hummingbird...after all that is what I was looking for. I strolled up to it ...by now I have a routine when taking hummingbird pictures...but was stopped in my tracks when I saw this thing up close. The size of a hummingbird....hovered like a hummingbird...drank nectar like a hummingbird...BUT THIS WAS NO HUMMINGBIRD!

After taking the picture...my first stop was Google...the next stop was youtube and lo and behold there it was in all it's glory...yep a Hummingbird Moth. The link will take you to a video of almost the exact moth as in the picture.

It was news to me that this even existed. Nature never fails to amaze me.

They are amazing! I've only seen a couple here in the 6 yrs I've been here. The first time was in a Walmart garden area. I followed him for about a half hour! The second one was a couple of years later in my backyard. They don't seem to pay much attention to people either. Great shot Dan!

How wonderful that you got a picture. I have only seen these moths a couple of times and didn't have my camera handy.

These elusive creatures are definitely fascinating!!! I have been enamored by their mystery since the first time I saw several buzzing around my moon-flowers at dusk on a summer evening years ago. They move so fast that I did not ever know if I could capture a photo! But this year in April, I finally did~~~
